Dear NFA-UNLV current and prospective members,
I'm writing to remind you of the very important upcoming spring general meeting, next Wed April 29th at 1pm in room 112 of the Law School. Light refreshments will be served.
This will be UNLV-NFA's first general meeting in quite some time, and the first since I became Interim President in January of this year, with the hope of reinvigorating our chapter, so I really hope all current NFA members can be there and we can continue to build on our momentum. At this meeting, we'll have
1. Chapter update and elections
At this meeting, we'll have an update on what NFA has been doing at three levels to try to reinvigorate the voice of faculty -- at UNLV, statewide in Nevada and (through AAUP) nationally. We're at a moment of renewal of ideas, energy and leadership in NFA, and I'm hopeful that all current members will want to hear about, and be a part of, that.
Part of that renewal will be nominations for and elections of UNLV-NFA board members. In addition to the executive board officers established in our by-laws, we will also be forming a committee of college-level NFA liasons. If you are interested in serving on either the executive board or as a college-level liason (or want to nominate someone else) please let me know either before or at this meeting.
2. Legislative update
I'll also give an update on our legislative advocacy efforts and what we can all do in the final weeks of the legislative session to make our voice heard on issues of utmost importance to faculty, especially in response to the prospect of furloughs, pay cuts and cuts in health benefit coverage. The final phase of their work will begin next May 1 when the "Economic Forum" reports on state revenue, so this meeting will provide us a chance to kick off our final press.
3. Legal defense update
The NFA this past year reorganized its legal defense to be more effective, and our state legal defense chair and UNLV colleague Rob Correales will update us on that very important part of NFA's work.
Any other suggestions for discussion items are most welcome, so please let me know if you have anything you'ld like to discuss at this meeting.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, this is meeting is open to all UNLV faculty and pro-staff (though only those who are members in good standing by next Tuesday will be able to nominate and vote for officers). I'm asking everyone to please bring at least one departmental colleague who is not currently an NFA member with you. Please also feel free to forward this message to others who, whether members or not, might be interested in learning about UNLV-NFA.
In solidarity,
Gregory Brown
