State of UNLV: commitment to maintaining programs and staff

In his State of the University speech this morning, President Smatresk talked about a wide range of issues facing UNLV in the coming year -- and expressed as the highest priority maintaining current instructional and research programs and current levels of faculty faculty and staff to support those programs.

As he put it in his presentation (published by the Sun):

We will retain current faculty and staffing
levels and thereby preserve our educational
and research mission

While no one can be certain of what this year will hold, it is important that academic leadership is setting priorities -- and those priorities are academic ones.

He also praised faculty and staff for our "work ...to minimize [the impact of] budget cuts" on our students and university community.

The Faculty Alliance naturally joins in these sentiments.
