Layoffs without exigency

This morning's Inside Higher Education has a story about state systems laying off tenured faculty without a declaration of financial exigency. This is an issue that is very quickly going to be addressed in Nevada, where program review is now already underway on at least three campuses. In at least one case, the university administration has made clear that it will likely result in the termination of tenured faculty.

The AAUP nationally opposes using program review in place of financial exigency. The NFA is following closely the legal, political and financial implications of decisions being made on NSHE campuses and will seek to ensure that rights of faculty, tenured and untenured, are defended in a vigorous, responsible manner on each campus and at the state level.
